Sestriere Recap: Lady Luck was on our side; on the flight over, the plane was empty so we could spread out and sleep, sunny skies every day, temps 25 to 30, free ski lockers at the base, just 50 feet away, our newly remodeled hotel located in the heart of the village, and of course 'The Food' - plenty of it!! The ski area was vast and well linked for getting around. Trail maps were easy to follow, and of course all that sunshine helped. There were steeps and deeps and off pist too, with plenty of groomed runs. The steep stuff was hard packed so you had to watch your speed; we could see why the Olympic ski races were held here - real fast! Conditions improved as the week progressed and when we finally made it to France; powder powder powder!!! Yes you heard that right. Our late afternoons were spent in the Hotel with High Tea OR "High Balls" (that means drinks).
On Wednesday, most of us did a private guided tour of Turino. We started with a driving tour of the city, then visited Castles, A Medieval Garden and Village, a walking guided tour; walked on Roman ruins that were over 2,500 years old (WOW), got to see Michelangelo's "Madonna Col Bambino" on loan from the Vatican. We had some free time to walk and take in the sights and sounds of this most amazing city, so much to see. We finished our day at the Castello di Miradolo with a limited engagment of the "Seconded Largest Egyptian Exhibit" in the world. It was to say - amazing to walk among the mumies and a collection like no other except in Ciro. After, we had classic Italian drinks in a beautiful indoor private room. We finally stepped out after dark to see the city lite up; the moon rising over the plaza and again walked. This was a day not to be forgotten.
Our luck continued as the week progressed, more sun, great skiing and the day we left, a hugh storm hit europe, socked in fog, blizzard conditions and the temps dropped: as the saying goes: hell froze over. Yes you read that right. They got snow in Rome, the canals in Venice are presently frozen, and the temps are now 10 BELOW zero. We came home just in time!! You may be thinking, 'but I heard of an accident', what about the luck there? Well, got to look at the lucky side. We had travel insurance (worth $160). How lucky for Leeanna, who took a spill while going down one of those steeps, that we had insurance. So much was covered. A private helicopter ride to Turino hospital, her medical bills, doctors, first class plane ticket, private duty nurse on the plane, and an ambulance waiting at JFK to take her home....How lucky she was to have that all paid for!! Don't worry, she is doing fine, again VERY LUCKY she only had a pelvic fx, heals on own, not leg/hip needing surgery. Let's all wish her a speeding recovery. Special thanks to Christy, Silvia, Beau, and Debbie who helped coordinate the insurance and getting things to the hospital (passport for one thing) to get Leeanna on our plane home. Next stop: STEAMBOAT.
